Bermuda – Friendly people, pink sand, and great food. You cannot go wrong!
Love at first cruise…
It is no secret that my husband and I love to travel and my personal favorite is Bermuda. I fell in love with Bermuda when I went on a cruise with my husband and in-laws. There are so many reasons to love Bermuda and I wanted to take a moment to highlight my favorite parts of the island.
I have only ever traveled to Bermuda via a cruise ship, which I love. You are entertained while you are traveling and depending on the cruise duration you can have multiple stops along the way. Having an overnight stop in Bermuda is key to getting in the most out of the destination. My number one stop is Horseshoe beach, but I always go the second day because of the amount of excursions that typically go there on the first day. I also suggest getting up early and snagging a local taxi to get you there ahead of any excursion if there are any planned for that day. .
Horseshoe Beach
Horseshoe Beach is THE beach when it comes to Bermuda. It has pink sand beaches and the rock cliffs that surround the beach are beautiful, making it feel like an isolated cove. I particularly enjoy the tidepool area, my son who is three loves it because at low tide he can play out in the water and it only goes to his waist with little to no waves. There are also bathrooms and a small restaurant if you get hungry or thirsty.
Spicy Dicy? Huh
My husband and I love seafood and honestly, we are a bit of a foodie couple so when we are in Bermuda we love to try different restaurants. I personally love a great fish Sandwich so I am always on the hunt for one. Our Second trip to Bermuda we came upon Art Mel’s Fish Sandwich place that was amazing. It was located in Georgetown but moved to a residential area in Hamilton. If you find a local taxi driver they should know where it is and will gladly take you there. Make sure you get someone willing to wait while you get the sandwich because it is residential and not too many taxis pass through that area. Otherwise, if you are like us, ask a local where they like to eat and go there. I have never had a bad meal in Bermuda and it is all freshly caught.
It’s bullet, it’s a plane, it’s a super fast ferry!
Another highlight that we love is the high speed ferry. You can buy a day pass, two day pass or tokens for minimal cost. This ferry runs on set times all day and the tokens or day passes can also work for the buses. The ferry can take you to Hamilton, St. George or Kings Wharf. Kings Wharf is generally where most cruise ships dock unless the cruise ships are rather small due to the reefs that surround Bermuda. We love to go to Hamilton or St. George via the ferry and ride the bus back to see the interior of the island.
The small but fun zoo. Where you can pet a sea turtle!
If you are traveling with your family or children, my personal favorite is the Zoo and Aquarium, they are at the same location and ticket will admit you to both sections. The Aquarium, although small, has very different fish and creatures that you will not see in the United States. A lot of the fish are native to the Bahamas and it is a nice way to see the wildlife without snorkeling or scuba diving. They also have a seal exhibit just outside of the Aquarium section that was my sons favorite, and sea turtles will greet you at the entrance. The zoo is honestly amazing. Again it is small but you get to see creatures up close; and animals that typically you do not see in the United States. You are able to walk through monkey and bird habitats; the birds are in trees right above your head and the monkeys are mere feet from you. You are also afforded a beautiful view of the ocean because the zoo is placed on a cliff that overlooks the water. They even put viewing platforms that overlook areas where sea turtles and other ocean life can typically be seen.
Sometimes it is ok to just be a tourist.
There are a few things that my husband and I find touristy but fun to do while visiting Bermuda as well and that is to go to Calico Jack’s floating bar. It is located right outside of the cruise ship and it is kid friendly during the day. It is a great spot to sip on a drink and if you have kids they can “walk the plank” and play in the water. They also typically have inflatables on the water where kids can slide and jump as well.
Every time we go we find something new to do, we are returning this summer and I plan to either visit the crystal caves, they are a massive underground cave system that descends into the water so you need a walkway to cross; or the Bermuda arboretum, which is a trail that goes through the natural foliage of Bermuda.
Whatever you choose to do, do it with friends and family and have a ball. See you on your next adventure!
